Trust is much harder. Instead of relying on fear and control, real toughness is linked to self-directed learning, feeling competent in your skills, being challenged but allowed to fail, and above all, feeling cared for by the team or organization.

meeet the coach
Hi, I’m Sarah Ter Har, your dedicated Running Coach with a passion for endurance running, unwavering optimism, gritty determination, and a commitment to inspire others. Having been an endurance runner for over 30 years, I bring a wealth of experience and a unique perspective to coaching.
As a former high school track and cross country athlete, I embarked on my first ultra at the age of 41, spanning distances from 900 meters to an impressive 68 miles. With a coaching portfolio that extends up to the challenging 250-mile distance, I hold UESCA certifications in both Ultra Running and Endurance Sports Nutrition. Currently pursuing P1 Nutrition & Yoga Instructor Certifications, I am dedicated to expanding my expertise to better serve my athletes.
My coaching philosophy is grounded in scientific research, utilizing evidence-based findings to provide the most up-to-date knowledge in the field. Supported by my husband, a biomechanist with a Masters in Kinesiology, I continuously enhance my education, ensuring that my clients benefit from the latest and most accurate information available.
Beyond being a full-time coach and ultra runner, I also wear the hats of a business owner, running event director, mother, and spouse. I understand the challenges of balancing a busy schedule while finding time to train. I take pride in helping runners maximize the quality of their training sessions, enabling them to savor all the other joys life has to offer.
Join me on a journey to achieve your running goals, whether it's your first event or your twentieth. Every runner is unique, and I am here to make your running experience not only effective but also personally rewarding. A few of the places I’ve explored…
-
Malibu
The Santa Monica Mountains and Malibu Creek State Park are mainstays on rotation in my running schedule. The terrain includes a little of everything, and is great training for nearly any goal an endurance runner has in mind.
-
Grand Canyon
I’ve run R2 from South Kaibab, to the Colorado River, and up to Bright Angel. An unforgettable experience, this is now one of my favorite places. My near future goals include running R3.
-
Topanga
Don’t let this area’s proximity to civilization fool you- it offers a trove of challenging adventures in the Santa Monica Mountains with sweeping vista views of meadows, valleys, and the Pacific Ocean.
-
Smith Rock
Located in the Central Oregon high desert and sitting around 3,000 feet in elevation, this area is characterized by deep river canyons, 30-million-year-old compressed volcanic ash rock outcroppings, and miles of trails.
-
Deschutes River Trail
Pine-needle covered trails intertwined with segments of meadow, the DRT is a trail-runners dream. I’ve run both the upper and lower sections of the DRT during all four seasons of the year. Don’t forget the micro-spikes in the winter!
-
Central Arizona
This area is very diverse, including dry desert areas with sparse vegetation, plus others that are ruggedly beautiful. The trails are lined with an abundance of desert flora, and are extremely rocky and filled with long, remote segments that both climb and descend, challenging even the most seasoned runners.
-
Rocky Peak
Situated above Simi Valley, this prehistoric-feeling area is exactly as the name implies- rocky! Combine that with vertical gain, heat and very little cover and you’ve got yourself a demanding run. One of the races I direct is held here.
-
Cuyamaca
Located about 45 miles east of San Diego, the mix of Oak and Pine Forests with large boulders amongst the demanding Laguna Mountains will have you climbing 4,000+ feet in a single climb before you know it.
-
Agua Tibia Wilderness
Part of the Cleveland National Forest, this dry region is dotted with mixed forests, scrub, and challenging trails that wind around to breathtaking vistas. There are several access points to explore the area and I ran here often when I lived nearby.
-
North Oregon Coast
Breathtaking ocean and mountain views are standard here. The frequent rains keep the surrounding forests lush and the trails soft (and muddy)! It’s fun to run from the mountains down onto the beach all in one run.
-
San Mateo Canyon Wilderness
Found within the heart of one of the few California Coastal wilderness areas, you’ll find undisturbed old-growth chaparral, riparian woodlands, trickling creeks, shallow ponds, and rugged, rocky outcroppings. Much of this area is fairly remote, so running extra prepared is a must.
-
Los Padres NF
I have run many trails in the front country here, so it would be hard to list a specific area. Fall and Springtime are my favorites, however there’s great options year-round. Constant gain/loss keep things interesting and the dramatic views are worth the effort.
-
Sequoia National Park
Huge mountains, rugged foothills, deep canyons, vast caverns, pristine lakes and waterfalls, and the world's largest trees are the main attractions within the diversity of landscapes, life, and beauty found in Sequoia National Park.
-
California's Central Coast
Rugged cliffs, secluded sandy beaches, coastal plains, streams, canyons, hills, wildflowers, and the most amazing starry nights. The wildlife viewing is top notch. Temperature fluctuations are vast depending on the location; the coast might be 50 degrees, while a few miles inland it’s 80-90 degrees.
My Approach
Is running YOUR passion too? Feed it well, with whatever motivates you. Set attainable goals. Surround yourself with people who support you- your relatives, your running family, and a good coach.
Dream it
Tell me your ultra running dreams and I’ll help you craft a realistic plan to achieve them. Whether it’s your first race or the running bucket adventure of your life (hello Grand Canyon or Alps!), I enjoy helping everyday people go after their ultra running goals. Together we can figure out how to make those near-future and long-term goals happen.
Build it
I use science-backed research paired with first-hand running experience and coaching knowledge. I’ll develop a custom training plan for you in the Training Peaks program. Concerned about the demands of training fitting around your job and family life? I can help shape a plan based on your unique goals and lifestyle needs.
